How to care for pearl jewelry

Pearls can be the most special and sentimental piece of jewelry you own. But pearls are not like other metal or precious stone jewelry you might own. Pearls require special care and maintenance to give them the longest life possible. So how do you care for your pearl for jewelry? Here are some of Kristen’s tips on how to maintain your pearls.

Pearls are porous stones which means they are absorbent. Perfume, makeup, hairspray, and other cosmetic products can settle in the pearls’ pores and damage the luster. Always be sure to put pearls on after getting ready.

Compared to other precious stones and metals, pearls have a very soft exterior. Kristen recommends storing your pearl jewelry and metal jewelry separately. The delicate exterior of the pearls will scratch and wear against other pieces.

Even though Kristen Diana Designs has created the Every Wear Pearl line of jewelry, there are one or two places we recommend you don’t wear your pearls. Despite the fact that pearls come from water, it is not a good idea to swim, bathe, shower, or exercise in pearls. The chemicals and salts in these waters can damage the surface of the pearls. Not only can these activities harm the exterior of the pearl, they can also stretch and wear out their string.

After wearing your pearls, wipe them lightly with a damp cloth (water only) and gently dry them before storing them. It is best to store your pearl bracelets or pearl necklaces laying down. If these pieces are hung, their strings will stretch out much faster and will have to be restrung more often.

With some additional love and care your pearls will have a long and stylish life!
